Off-White is a fashion brand from Italy, founded in 2012 by Virgil Abloh. Virgil was an American fashion designer and entrepreneur. He was the artistic director of Louis Vuitton's Menswear Collection before becoming the CEO of Off-White.

 

Is the Off-White logo from Glasgow Airport?

Off-White was initially called Pyrex Vision, but Virgil renamed it because he thought there was a lack of concept with it. Unknowing to a lot of people, he actually borrowed the Off-White logo identity and the name from the Glasgow Airport design system and the British Railway system that was developed in the 1960s.

 

Where did the Off-White logo come from?

In 1964, Kinneir Calvert Associates, a UK-based design group best known for creating the majority of road signs worldwide, developed a design system for the new Glasgow Airport. Part of the system was a black and white emblem that was meant to look like the St Andrew's Cross, with four arrows pointing into each corner.

This was the Off-White logo inspiration. They came up with a paint scheme for the airport's vehicles and flight ladders, which features a yellow stripe pattern placed on top of the vehicles to make them more visible from the air. This is where the Off-White logo meaning came from.

 

Why is it called Off-White?

In 1964, Kinneir Calvert Associates designed signs for the British Railway System and created a font called Rail Alphabet, which could be used in six different weights. The lightest font weight was called Off-White, which is where the Off-White brand got its name from.
